Robert Reid joins MiDeer as an Independent Senior Advisor on economic development, labour market and vocational training
MiDeer is proud to announce that Robert Reid, one of New Zealand's most knowledgeable practitioners on labour market, workplace culture and vocational training, has been engaged as an Independent Senior Advisor from October 2026.
Mr Reid has fifty years' experience in New Zealand's labour market. He was General Secretary and then President of Workers First Union, with more than 30,000 members. He has held senior appointments in government and industry, including the combined MIT and Unitec boards, the Tāmaki Makaurau Regional Skills Leadership Group and the Forest Industry Safety Council. His connection with China goes back to 1972.

Workforce and employment advisory
Getting the employment side right from the first hire: recruitment and onboarding, training and capability, retention and workplace culture, employment relations, and pastoral care for workers new to the country or new to industrial work.
Cross-border business culture
Helping companies arriving in New Zealand understand how New Zealand businesses, unions and workplaces run. China first, and in time the same service for companies from other non-English speaking countries, especially in Asia.
Training
A programme for the leaders and staff of overseas owned companies here, teaching New Zealand business culture and management, delivered by someone who knows this market from the inside. As well as China, the same programme can serve companies from elsewhere in Asia.
Capital and funding
Helping New Zealand companies raise capital from China, alongside MiDeer's existing work in this area.
